The New Mexico Suncats 18u Gold Gandert team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for the Heart of America Fastpitch League (HFL) Mid Atlantic Qualifier played February 5–7. They were the only team representing the Rocky Mountain Fastpitch League (RMFL) at the tournament. Though the Suncats were not able to earn AFCS berths from the event, it was a great opportunity for them to compete against other Alliance Fastpitch teams across the country and earn valuable points towards their Alliance Power Point (APP) rankings, and RMFL standing.
Here are some of the highlights from the tournament:
Left fielder Presley Skinner hit a two-run home run that coach Jonathan Gandert estimated went 265 feet. Skinner has committed to continue her career at New Mexico State University.
Shortstop Jaycie Gandert and second baseman Aja Richard combined for a double play when Gandert caught a fly ball and threw to Richard for the second out. Gandert has committed to UNC and Richard will go to the University of Texas at El Paso.
Gandert also made a barehanded grab and threw to first baseman Alexis Gilio to end the inning. Gilio will continue her career at Brigham Young University.
