Every athlete's journey to college is different, and where your daughter falls on this timeline depends on her goals, her position, and what kind of program is the right fit for her. This isn't a checklist, and missing a window doesn't mean the door is closed. Recruiting shifts, circumstances change, and the right coach at the right school has a way of finding the right athlete. What this timeline gives you is context, so you can show up to the right events, make the right moves, and build a profile that does the work even when you're not in the room.
10U–12U: Development
The focus at this stage is fundamentals, love of the game, and building competitive experience on a team. There should be no recruiting pressure at this age, but the skills, habits, and softball IQ developed here create the foundation for everything that follows. Families can begin familiarizing themselves with the recruiting landscape without placing pressure on young athletes.
Think of this window as investing in the habits that will compound. The athlete who understands footwork, arm mechanics, and how to compete through failure at 11 arrives at 14U with a head start.
14U: Exposure Begins
This is when athletes start building a verifiable travel ball resume. Verified stats begin to accumulate, and college coaches at the D1 level in particular are beginning to pay attention to athletes in this age range. 16U: Showcase Strategy
For most programs, this is the prime recruiting window. Athletes should be attending high-profile showcase and qualifier events, actively communicating with college coaching staffs, and refining their athlete profile with updated stats and a highlight video. National rankings and leaderboard recognition carry real weight during this stretch, with coaches cross-referencing profiles against performance data when making scholarship decisions.

"The filters I use are position, grad year, and location mainly. When I look deeper, they always have a highlight video, they have the club they are currently playing at. And when I want a closer look, I then look at what program they are looking to go into academically."

18U: National Championship Exposure
For uncommitted athletes, high-visibility national events like the AFCS and Super Cup Finals represent some of the final major opportunities to perform in front of a concentrated group of college coaches. With 200+ coaches attending Super Cup Finals alone, no other travel ball setting puts an athlete in front of that much recruiting attention in a single week.
For athletes who are already committed, this stage is about finishing a travel ball career strong, earning recognition, and enjoying the experience they have worked toward.
"Athletes that already express interest definitely stand out. GPA is also a factor for Division III programs like us who don't offer athletic scholarships."
"A high GPA is always the indicator that someone is coachable and takes instruction well. In the world of buzz-words and check marks, this is a huge gold star on your recruiting page. Athletic statistics are great, but something that not every high school player can get accurate access to, so it depends on the level they play at and whether those are even possible to obtain."
What College Coaches Are Actually Looking For

Coaches evaluate swing mechanics, defensive footwork, arm action, and for pitchers, spin and corner location, within seconds of hitting play.
